CalMHSA - Hero Within

In Los Angeles County, 1,500 children are removed from their homes each month and put into the foster care system. Many of these children have no idea what’s going on. RSE was tasked to create an informative resource that would resonate with 8-12 years olds and guide them through the process. The graphic novel “Hero Within” was created to help these children cope with what they are going through by following our main character, Corada, on a journey that is very similar to their own but is set in a completely different world. The fantastical setting of “The Hub” introduces the reader to the additional characters with unique superpowers that help Corada find her inner strength and help her along the way. Additional features of the comic book include local resource information, activities and blank pages with prompts to assist the children in writing down their responses. By interacting with the graphic novel, children will be able to find different ways to get through tough situations, will help them understand they are not alone and will encourage them to discover their very own superpower within.
